NAME: Subaru Akehoshi
CANON: Ensemble Stars!
CANON POINT: Horror Night Halloween
AGE: 17
BACKGROUND: The school, his character page, and appearances.
But!! To put the most important events in short:
Subaru Akehoshi was born to his mother, a normal woman, and his father, a rising star so popular and phenomenal, he was called a Super Idol... However, this marriage, and his existence, had to remain a secret, since in times past it wasn't accepted for idols to have relationships whatsoever. Despite that, he loved his father very much, and when his father was able to come home, they would have small family lives. This, and seeing his father on stage, first gave Subaru his love of idols, and the dream to reach the same stage one day.
However, such precious things didn't last. Subaru's father, growing more drained by the day due to how the idol industry changed from being about the fans to being about numbers, eventually ended up in a situation beyond his control, and was charged with murder of a fan during a concert. What'd really happened (as exposed in a later event) was that the fan had hurt themselves trying to get onto stage and ended up dying from the injury, but the stigma and news stories that highlighted his accountability -- wrongful as they were, seemingly drawn by someone else -- cast him into prison for a crime he didn't commit, ending in Subaru's father's death as suffered alone.
That sudden disappearance happened on Subaru's birthday.
With some digging, people found out he had a son (Subaru) and wife, and so what was left of the Akehoshi family were thrown into a brief time of constant moving, since they didn't want to give up the last name in fear that it'd erase Subaru's father completely, thanks to their neighbors and exfans alike more or less trashing their places whatever chance they got. Originally living near to the school Subaru would later attend, they were forced away for many years.
Attending Yumenosaki Academy, a school supposed to be made for idols, by idols, was a decision Subaru made all himself, simply because he loved idols despite all that'd happened and wanted to sing and dance, just like his father had. The truth was that the name Akehoshi hadn't left so easily, and so he was the son of "that" Akehoshi, resulting in somewhat of a lonesome first year... doing all he could to make friends despite the hushed words and such surrounding him at every corner, even accepting day duty (cleaning the classroom, writing in the logbook, etc etc) on days that weren't his just to grab onto the illusion of it.
That sort of thing came to a stop with someone he could probably call one of his first friends, Natsume Sakasaki, and from there he began to open up more and become a shining individual that would eventually become one part of the four-man unit Trickstar, along with the other first years he preformed with (Makoto Yuuki, Hokuto Hidaka, and Mao Isara) during a special concert called the Venus Live, made to show off new talents by the Student Council.
Fast forward a bit, and you get the main story! While Yumenosaki Academy had once been an idol school for idols by idols, it'd been on a steady decline as people realized they could just be idols in name and gain special status versus actually doing any hard work, so long as the passionate few did what they were serious about. The student council that came into power during Subaru's first year uprooted and discarded this way of thinking with the introduction of a new system that's still in place today: The DreFes system, where units of two to five people would perform in different levels of lives for grading purposes. The only levels that matter school-wise are those A1 and above though, with S1 being school-wide and SS being more regional, it'd seem.
Subaru and Trickstar's role during the main story is that of revolutionists. While the DreFes system threw off and cut down on dispassionate people, it'd become too iron clad to the point that people didn't seem to have fun with the lives they did, that it was just for grades and felt... empty, in a way. With the introduction of the test-run of the Producer course into Yumenosaki bringing in the only girl, Anzu (who had previously tried to dismantle something similar at her old school, Kimisaki, and had been bullied out for it), Trickstar felt they finally had the key of victory in their grasp, and set to working on finding ways to free everyone up.
The student council didn't like this, of course. Or rather, the president most of all -- Eichi Tenshouin. Despite the allies they'd gained, Trickstar found themselves in a worsening predicament as they were pushed apart by the reality of fine, Eichi's group, being so much stronger than anything else, and thinking seriously on the offers given to each in exchange for disbanding Trickstar. Subaru never once wavered from their unit, though Makoto admittedly wasn't given much choice in the matter as he was kidnapped and held hostage, and while he was adamant on pulling Trickstar back together, he and Anzu were prepared to be the only two (with her in disguise) on the grandest stage Yumenosaki had created in order to pick out the top unit which was to represent the academy during that year's SS: The DDD.
Thankfully, Trickstar came back together at the last second, and with the help of their allies managed to wear down and defeat fine in the final round of the DDD, the first unit to do so since fine's creation and starting a revolution to better the academy, to let fresh air into the stale lungs of the idols there. The DreFes system was loosened in restrictions, the ironclad fist that held the school opened and became a palm of acceptance, and Trickstar became the representatives of Yumenosaki Academy.
That's not the end of their troubles, and to affirm themselves more solidly as well as have practice for the big name event, they began to battle outside schools during a sort of pilgrimage, working alongside different units and the like. Two of these are the only important named ones, Adam and Eve, that combine into a superunit called Eden, who were to be their biggest threat and rival for victory at the SS.
Cosmic Productions, or CosPro for short, is the agency both Adam and Even work under despite being in different schools. During the Summer Live, Eve (comprised of Hiyori Tomoe and Jun Sazanami) crushed them mercilessly in terms of stage presence, taking complete control, but despite that the two units are on by far the friendliest terms, partially due to the fact that Trickstar were taught valuable skills by the two and it was more of a joint live than anything. During the Autumn Live, in which Trickstar more formally battled Adam (comprised of Nagisa Ran and Ibara Saegusa), Ibara talked up and tempted them with the same sort of reality that Eichi had once reminded of them shortly before the DDD, and all save Subaru (and, secretly, Makoto) fell once more into the trap.
Thankfully, they were once more able to overcome that and beat Adam on stage, though still somewhat shaken at the end.
There's been various events between all of these, but these are the most important when in regards to Subaru's history... The current canon point he's at is set nearly directly after Autumn Live, with Halloween more or less being a week and some days away.
The actual short of this event is that across the various interviews that Trickstar's done about Yumenosaki in general, a freelance reporter pulled together different contexts and the like in order to make it seem as if Trickstar felt they were self-important and better than the rest of their school and particularly of a rival unit called Knights. It was decided that Trickstar, on top of public apologies and saying that the magazine's articles were published without proper authoritative checks for slander like this, would be competing with Knights in a secret popularity battle in order to clear the air properly.
He pretty much comes right before they get on stage for the Halloween Party.
PERSONALITY: Subaru's personality definitely matches his looks: He's warm and cheerful, outspoken and outgoing, and friendly towards anyone he meets on first impression. He's very much a positive force, always looking at the brighter side of a situation if he can and holding on with single-minded determination to what he feels is "right" and "just". This can come with bad points, though, as he's not the type to give up, it's easy to more or less ruin himself... and with how much emphasis he puts on friendships, having them and making them, something like separation and loneliness destroys him pretty thoroughly.
However, he's also... like, stupid. Seriously stupid. It's mostly because he acts on his heart over his mind more often than not, always dashing ahead first to do what he can if a friend's in trouble or bothered, but it's not like he's a complete idiot either for what it's worth; Subaru has a knack of reading people and seeing through their words, able to get to the heart of it no matter how flowery or turnabout it can be. He's able to do it especially with people he knows well, but even in his first meeting with someone as tricksy as Natsume he was able to perceive the other with certain clarity.
That doesn't mean he's the type to quickly point it out though or anything like that. In fact, it's quite the opposite: If it's something that sounds pretty but isn't, like tempting offers or serious talks about this and that, Subaru's prone to claiming he doesn't understand such high talk and difficult concepts, when in reality he knows them very well. He's a sharp person, and his grades are one of the higher in his class on top of that, so it's very much a person who can do whatever he wants if he has an interest in it.
Speaking more on the determination bit, Subaru's a force of nature that'll stick to his guns no matter how unpopular the opinion is if he feels it's the right one. It's a trait he shares with his father, who refused to be helped through less than legal means to be freed from the prison that ultimately killed him, all because he knew it wasn't right to accept offers like that. Despite that, he's not one who holds grudges all that easily -- but he doesn't forget transgressions either, keeping a sort of wariness from memories.
This is most obvious in Autumn Live, when Ibara's schemes start to come to light in trying to essentially steal Trickstar from Yumenosaki and ultimately bring them into CosPro's agency as a continued powerhouse, a tactic that had been used in the past with students who thought the schools beneath its touch were the better future. While Subaru doesn't seem to hold it against Ibara, from then on he's pretty much never really wanting to be around the other because Ibara gives him "creepy feelings" and the like, which is about as much as you'd get on anyone Subaru disliked.
Other things that he dislikes, oddly enough, are things that he does himself? He loves to give people nicknames and act touchy with them, a very physical and affectionate person, but hates it when it's done toward him first. The important part, it seems, is that, that they act before he does. Chiaki Morisawa, the captain of his basketball team, is a very physical and touchy person just like Subaru himself, but Subaru always complains about it; the same is said about Arashi Narukami of Knights' clingyness, when he's just as clingy. It's an interesting contradiction which could be put down to a matter of control over a situation, as it's seen when Subaru starts to lose that due to outside forces he's rattled and prone to panic. A small symptom of a larger problem.
All in all, Subaru is but a teenage boy with little issue of personal space and a good heart, who wants the best for everyone and to spread smiles and happiness the way his father and other idols have, working hard so he can achieve a dream his father ultimately failed to grasp, SS... No matter how often he's thrown off his game, he has faith in his friends and in others to get by, and sincerely thinks that powering through as they've always done will eventually end up in victory, though he can recognize that that isn't always the case either (while his friends point this out, more or less acting as his reminder for things he knows but doesn't want to admit). For all his idiocy and all his stubbornness, there is a shining child who easily lightens the mood, who can befriend almost anyone in a day, who might've been afraid of being close to others due to the bullying of his past but envelopes himself in it now, that intimacy and love.
POWERS/ABILITIES: Subaru's skill lies in that he's a natural genius at anything idol-like, not just because of his heritage but because he loves it enough to always work at it no matter what... Dancing, singing, performing in general -- he can do it all and more, given instruction. He's also physically fit and extremely athletic, being one of the stars of the basketball team and even able to dunk a shot despite being shorter than the average height that's usually able to do with the same ease.
